Chevy El Camino: The Best of Both Worlds

In 1958, Chevrolet released the El Camino as a response to the Ford Ranchero sedan-pickup. The El Camino offered the utility of a pickup in a station wagon format by adding a truck bed to the Impala body. At Raybuck, our El Camino catalog focuses on parts from the second generation of El Camino and on:

  • – First generation (1959-1960): The first generation of El Caminos created the foundation for those to come. Although the 1959 and 1960 El Camino had low sales, the combination design would come back soon.
  • – Second generation (1964-1967): In their second attempt to compete with the Ford Ranchero, Chevy brought the El Camino back in 1964, this time using a Chevelle platform. This new generation had a more practical design than the first. Customers could choose performance versions that raised the El Camino’s power to 350 or 375 horsepower. Chevy revamped the El Camino’s bumper, grille and trim in 1967.
  • – Third generation (1968-1972): After its successful second generation, the El Camino received a four-door sedan wheelbase. Chevy also released a Super Sport (SS) package for the El Camino that changed its focus from utility to speed. Some 1970 El Caminos had Chevy’s LS6 engine that increased their horsepower to 450.
  • – Fourth generation (1973-1977): The fourth generation of the El Camino saw some dramatic changes to the body style, including a new front grille that debuted in 1975. The fourth generation retained the Super Sport (SS) option.
  • – Fifth generation (1978-1987): The final generation of the El Camino was smaller and featured a body style with sleeker lines. V6 engines were available for the first time and diesel engines were also an option for 1982-1984 models.
