From the Chevy II to the Nova

During the 1960s, the Chevy Nova transformed from an affordable compact option to a muscle car icon. The Chevy II Nova premiered in 1962 as a widely available compact car, followed by the sporty Nova SS in 1963. When muscle cars became popular in 1964, Chevy joined the trend with the Chevy II V8. By the time the Chevy II Nova became the Nova in 1968, muscle car enthusiasts considered it a serious contender.

Changes in emissions and safety regulations in the 1970s led to a new direction for the Nova. In 1971, the Chevy Nova reduced its engine horsepower from 375 hp to 270 hp. From 1972 to 1974, Chevy focused on cosmetic changes over performance upgrades for the Nova. The fourth generation began in 1975 and featured more safety features like brake discs. Chevy released the last Nova SS in 1977 and the last fourth generation Nova in 1979.
