Maximum Outside Dimension Chart for Automotive Batteries
Replacing the battery in most newer passenger vehicles is straight forward. Most people take their vehicle (or battery) to a local automotive store where the staff looks up the year, make and model and then provides a replacement battery that meets the same CA (cranking amps), CCA (cold cranking amps), dimensions and terminal layout as the old battery. Usually the only two deviations from the battery that was in the vehicle are for higher CCA (usually in colder climates) and/or a longer warranty period.
There are times when original battery specifications may not be available for reference, though. Maybe you’re working on an antique or classic, or are converting it from 6v to 12v. Or, maybe you are building a street rod, rock crawler, car hauler, etc and only know what amperage draw you need and what size compartment the battery needs to fit into. We put together the below chart for these scenarios to help you find a battery that will fit your application. All dimensions listed are maximum outside dimensions to the widest point, including terminal posts and flanges (based on data from the BCI Battery Replacement Data Book). Any hold-down flanges at the bottom of a battery are not included in these measurements.
We’ve included as many dimensions as we’ve been able to find, but if you can help fill in any of the gaps please email us at [email protected].

Very helpful. Now I know what not to get. Thanks
I would love this chart even more if you could filter on sizes and if it also contained the CCA.
great post needed a special sized battery for my modified p u truck any way to know if is a top post or a side bolt
Thanks Vernon. Sorry, we don’t have a reference for which ones are top or side post, though.
Thanks! Very helpful for us….tinksters.
what battery replaces a KEYKO KT-12550?
Thank you, I like the chart, but not sure of some of the possible typos or wrong sizes??
For example 24f size L and H are same size in inches but different sizes in metric. Can’t tell from the chart which numbers are correct and which are wrong.
Hi Greg, thanks for pointing out that typo. We have corrected it. I didn’t see any others, but please let us know if you find any discrepancies.
There was a comment that the 24f had the same L & H in inches but different in metric. You had changed it to be the same. Are you sure that a 24f Height is 10 3/4”. All the documentation that I have seen gives the height as 9”
Hi Stu, thanks for the info. Yes, after some review, it looks like the wrong dimension was updated on our site after the last comment. This has been corrected. The 24F should have a height of 9″.
Looking for the battery for a 2004 Mazda Miata. The code is U1R. Do you have the exact sizes?
Sorry, all of the codes that we have are in the table on this page.
Joe H. had trouble posting this reply ” I have the same problem with my 1999 Mazda Miata. When I got it there was a U1R1 in it measuring about 9.25 w, 5 d, 9 h.. My fave garage sells Interstate batteries and spec’d the correct bat as a Group AUX 46A24R (and it costs 200 clams!). This battery is not listed above and is 7.5 w, 5 d, 6.25 h. Online some people were replacing it with garden tractor batteries as low as $40 but much lower capacity and warranty. The only advantages of the spec OEM and tractor batteries is the low weight (this IS a sports car!).
I had a better solution: note the battery compartment is somewhat larger than the U1R and the batter tray at the bottom is definitely wider by over an inch. A couple years ago I owned a Honda Del Sol. It took a group 51R battery that you can see above has a very good chance of fitting the tray. The hold downs also worked, with a wood shim on top. This battery has much improved capacity at about a 7 lb greater weight… well appreciated with the trunk mount loooog wire path!
Important detail: you must get the sealed battery with the vents on the side to hook up to the Miata vent tubes. Failure could lead to a trunk full of Hydrogen gas and serious detriments to the body work when you hit the remote lock button! “
Thanks for this chart! It was exactly what I was looking for!
I am replacing the battery in my ‘36 hot rod and want the smallest with an emphasis on height.
Do your battery sizes include the height of the posts? If not I need a battery for my Corvette that is
8 3/4 (L) X 6 1/2 (W) X 7 (H). Any suggestions?
Yes, they include the posts.
great chart,I wanted the size so I could buy by size and c.c.a.,not what someone is selling.
Thank you for providing this chart. It took a lot of searching to find it, as most sites circle jerk a person around without providing the information requested. This was exactly for what I was searching. Thanks again.
sweet nice chart
Is the height dimension include the post + case or is it just the case?
Hi Bob. The dimensions include posts, etc. Thanks
Can you provide a generic chart with an estimated range of CCA per battery group/size? Thanks
Randy Howard
Thanks for this very useful chart. It had the dimensional information I needed, in a handy, easy to use format.
