Learn how to reset the oil change and service warning on your Chevy or GMC truck. Some refer to these lights as “idiot lights” others get worried at even the site of a warning light on the dash. If you’re in the first group, you’re probably looking to reset or turn the light out.
Reset Procedures Will Vary Depending on the Model and Year
Newer Chevy models will have a Vehicle Information Center (VIC) built in, older Chevy trucks will not. The year they switched to the VIC will depend on the model. Typically, 2006 or newer come with the GM Oil Life System. Here’s a general guide to resetting your truck’s oil change and service warning message.
Procedure for Chevy without VIC, or 2005 or Older GMCr
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the accessory power position.
- Within five seconds, press on the accelerator and push it to the floor three times.
- The oil light should flash on and off. If it fails to turn off, repeat this procedure.
Procedure for Chevy with VIC
- Turn the key to the accessory power position.
- Push the VIC button. It should have the letter “I” or an image of a road. Continue to press this button until you see the words “oil life” on the menu screen.
- Hold the checkmark button on the VIC for approximately 10 seconds, or until you see the oil life read as 100%.
For 2006 or Newer GMC Trucks or Cars
- Turn the key to the accessory power position.
- Push and hold the Enter button for one second after the oil life message appears.
- Turn the key to the off position after the Driver Information Center displays a reset message.

I have a 1992 Chevrolet 2500 diesel. I had the oil changed and they did not reset the warning light. It still says “Engine service needed.” I have tried the listted procedure 5 or 6 times and the warning is still there. How do I reset that to get rid of that warning? Thank you.
Hi Clarence. I’m not sure what else you can try. Hopefully someone else reading this post can recommend something for you, or you could call the place that changed the oil and ask them. If you find out that it’s a different process, please post that here. Thanks
